A
construction worker was fatally injured on Friday in an accident at a condominium site owned by Bruce Eichner's Continuum Company. The 45-year-old victim was operating a cherry picker at 34 East 35th Street when it collided with a steel beam around 9:15 a.m., according to Crain’s. A second worker, 35 years old, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The site has been under scrutiny from neighbors who have complained about alleged safety issues, including a shaking building and debris scattered throughout the area. An emergency team from the Department of Buildings visited the site last month but did not issue any violations.
Inspectors are now investigating the incident. Continuum Company has not commented on the accident. The company is redeveloping a project at 40 East 35th Street, which includes the Community Church of New York. Eichner's proposed development will feature an 18-story luxury condo with ground-floor commercial space and a garage.
The site was previously the subject of controversy over safety concerns. Fatalities on construction sites decreased by 36% last year, according to the Department of Buildings, but injuries increased by 38% in the prior three years as construction activity resumed after the pandemic.
