From Spare Room to Pawsome Retreat: A $1,000 Dog Owner's Dream Space

Nashville resident Elizabeth Lang transforms empty room into luxurious bedroom for her golden retriever, Pearl.

D
ogs are getting the ultimate luxury treatment, with owners transforming spare bedrooms into lavish dog suites. Elizabeth Lang, a 30-year-old from Nashville, TN, spent $1,000 to create a blinged-out bedroom for her golden retriever, Pearl, complete with a dog-sized sofa, ball pit, and wooden doghouse.

The room has been viewed by over 2 million people on Instagram and 300,000 on TikTok. Pet ownership is on the rise, with 59.8 million people in the US owning dogs and 42.2 million owning cats. As pets are considered part of the family, owners are investing in custom spaces that cater to their needs.

Interior designer Magda Callery notes that fully furnished dog suites are now a trend, complete with wallpaper, plush beds, and even chandeliers. Pet parents are sparing no expense, renovating homes and building custom spaces for their fur babies.

A doggie bedroom can be a selling point when moving, as it's a great conversation starter and adds charm to the home. However, for non-pet owners, it may just be extra storage. Nationally, there are 31.9 million spare bedrooms in the US, up from 7 million in 1980.

Homebuyers are increasingly looking for homes with unique features, such as home offices, gyms, and guest bedrooms. Some homeowners are taking it further by creating gaming lounges, room-sized closets, and mini home theaters. Wellness spaces like yoga or meditation rooms are also gaining popularity.

As spare bedrooms become flexible, multipurpose areas, homeowners are prioritizing spaces that promote relaxation, creativity, and personal growth. With the rise of pet ownership and changing lifestyles, spare bedrooms are being transformed into bespoke spaces that cater to individual needs and interests.
