From Wall Street to Main Street: A Former Stockbroker's Journey to Financial Freedom

Reaching financial freedom in my 50s required a real estate strategy.

B
rannon Potts, a 53-year-old former banker and finance professional, shifted his focus to real estate investing in his 50s with the goal of achieving financial freedom. He now owns 10 rental properties in Fort Worth, Texas, through "build-to-rent" projects, which he expects will generate enough cash flow for him to retire early once he reaches 20 doors.

Potts' journey into real estate began after years of working in banking and finance, during which time he fell behind on long-term savings. He realized that the power of time was now a liability for him, prompting him to explore alternative investment strategies. Potts credits his decision to pivot to real estate to conversations with multimillionaires who attributed their wealth to real estate investments.

Before investing in properties, Potts gained industry experience by working in sales and starting a property management company. This allowed him to learn about the market and develop a deeper understanding of the industry. By 2020, he felt prepared to invest in his first property, which marked the beginning of his "build-to-rent" strategy.

Potts' approach involves building new rental properties rather than buying existing ones. He has found that this method allows him to achieve higher returns and build equity more quickly. His average cash-on-cash return is 27%, significantly higher than what he would expect from a stock market fund. Potts expects to reach financial independence once he reaches 20 doors, which he plans to do in the next five years.

Potts' experience has also taught him the importance of holding his money "accountable" and making it work for him. He believes that treating one's money well is key to achieving financial freedom and wants to use his knowledge to help others through his YouTube channel.
