anet Way's love affair with her Minneapolis home began as soon as she stepped onto its broad, wood-paneled front porch in 2016. "I kind of fell in love with it the minute we walked up the front steps," she recalled. The house, built in 1904, boasts an impressive array of vintage carved-wood touches throughout its foyer and other rooms, including gleaming hardwood floors, door-framing pillars, wainscoting, and intricate trim work.
The 3,880-square-foot American foursquare has a spacious foyer, formal dining room, and kitchen that was expanded from a former butler's pantry. The second floor features three bedrooms, an office, and a three-season porch, while the third floor is dedicated to an owners' suite with a bedroom, sitting area, bathroom, and walk-in closet. The basement has been partially finished as a rec room.
Way appreciates the craftsmanship that went into building this home, which has stood the test of time despite being over 120 years old. "They knew how to build quality back then," she said. She also loves the chimney that rises through the house, its bricks visible on three floors, and the restored windows that preserve their original glass.
As temporary caretakers of the house, Janet and her husband Murray are mindful of maintaining it for future generations. When preparing to sell, they consulted with hardwood experts who recommended only a light sanding and varnish application for the floors, which had been used as office space in the 1980s by a law firm.
Their real estate agent, Constance Vork, has a personal connection to the house, having lived there as a child. She credits her experience with influencing her career choice in real estate and her interest in restoring older homes. One of Janet's favorite features is the stunning maple tree in the front yard, which turns brilliant red each fall and attracts many admirers who stop to take pictures.
