H&M shutters two major Manhattan outlets, hurting city’s retail scene.

H&M plans to close ~200 of its 4,300+ stores worldwide as a cost‑cutting measure.

H
&M will close two Manhattan outlets—18 Church St. at the World Trade Center and 150 E 86th St.—in January, per the state Labor Department’s online filings. The shutdowns release 55,000 sq ft of retail space at a time when New York’s market is still rebounding from pandemic lows. The move is part of the Swedish retailer’s global strategy to shut roughly 200 of its 4,300 stores. After the closures, only eight H&M locations will remain in the city.
