Hoboken's Real Estate Lobby Accused of Misleading Campaign Practices

Three Housing Groups Oppose Hoboken Rent Control Referendum, Accuse Opponents of Dishonest Tactics

T
hree housing groups have come out against the Hoboken rent control referendum on November 5th, accusing the opposing side of dishonest campaign tactics. The landlords' group, Miles Square Taxpayers Association (MSTA), backed by wealthy developers and corporate landlords, is using underhanded methods to trick voters into supporting a ballot measure that would dismantle key rent protections.

The MSTA has falsely claimed to be "supporting affordable housing" while collecting signatures for a referendum that would actually allow landlords to raise rents on their rent-controlled properties to the maximum market rate. This would eliminate existing affordable rentals in Hoboken and displace working families, longtime residents, and seniors living below market rate.

By using the name of the trusted Hoboken Fair Housing Association (HFHA) as their Instagram handle, the MSTA is attempting to mislead voters into supporting a proposal that benefits landlords over renters. The HFHA, alongside Hoboken United Tenants (HUT), strongly condemns this referendum and urges everyone to vote NO on the ballot question.

This is not just a fight for affordable housing; it's a fight for the future of Hoboken as a diverse, fair, and accessible community. If the anti-rent control lobby succeeds, Hoboken will become even more unaffordable, pushing out the people who make this city vibrant and inclusive. A vote NO on this referendum is a vote to protect Hoboken's renters, preserve affordability, and ensure that our city remains a place for everyone.

The HFHA, an affiliate of the New Jersey Tenants Organization (NJTO), stands united with renters in fighting for fair and just protections that Hoboken deserves. Let's not be fooled by the deceitful tactics of a group more interested in their bottom line than in the well-being of Hoboken's residents. Protect your neighbors. Protect your city. Vote NO on the anti-rent control referendum.
