HomeServices CEO Denies Company is on the Market

Gino Blefari denies Wall Street Journal report of Compass acquisition talks.

G
ino Blefari, President and CEO of HomeServices of America, has denied reports that Compass is in talks to acquire the company. In a statement shared with franchisees, Blefari said there are "no discussions, negotiations or agreements" to sell HomeServices or its affiliated companies, including the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices franchise business. He also stated that no such sale is being contemplated.

The Wall Street Journal reported on March 13 that Compass was in advanced talks to acquire HomeServices of America, one of its top competitors. Blefari noted that the story was based on rumors from unnamed sources and that HomeServices was not given notice of the article or an opportunity to respond. He acknowledged that the misinformation may have caused alarm and disruption among agents and their networks.

Compass has not commented on the latest rumors surrounding a potential acquisition, but in February, a spokesperson said that accretive mergers and acquisitions would continue to be part of its growth strategy. Industry leaders have predicted further consolidation of brokerages due to changes in the real estate market, including the repeal of NAR's Clear Cooperation Policy and an industry-wide push toward private listings.

Compass CEO Robert Reffkin has emphasized the company's brokerage strategy, aiming to get more listings and increase inventory. He believes that having a unique inventory and end-to-end platform will make Compass a more attractive option for buyers and agents alike.
