ES MOINES, Iowa – Friends and family will gather Wednesday for the funeral of Bill Knapp, a prominent Iowa real‑estate developer who passed away Saturday at 99. Born in Detroit and raised on his family’s farm in Allerton, Knapp served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before returning home. He spent decades transforming Iowa Realty and later Knapp Properties into one of the state’s largest commercial‑real‑estate firms.
Knapp was also known for his philanthropy. He donated millions to Drake University, the Iowa State Fair, and many other charities, and he gave land for the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, where he will be buried. His generosity earned praise from all four living Iowa governors, who highlighted his impact beyond politics.
Republican Governor Terry Branstad said, “Bill was a friend and a patriot who helped shape central Iowa’s growth. Though we were from different parties, we worked together on economic development and I will miss his genuine spirit.” Branstad, the nation’s longest‑serving governor, had once endorsed Knapp in 2014.
Governor Kim Reynolds added, “Bill’s vision made Des Moines what it is today. He was a devoted family man, veteran, and philanthropist. We offer our condolences to his wife Susan and family, and we thank him for a legacy that will endure.”
Former Democratic Governor Tom Vilsack reflected, “The state lost a legend. Bill was a visionary, community leader, and generous philanthropist who never forgot his roots. His donation of land for the Veterans Cemetery and his challenge to use power for the common good will live on.” Vilsack, former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, noted Knapp’s lifelong dedication to improving lives.
Chet Culver, another former Democratic governor, remarked, “Bill did it all with style and humility. He was an Iowa icon, a veteran, and a beloved friend. His entrepreneurial spirit and selfless service set an example for future generations.”
Knapp is survived by his wife Susan and three daughters. His funeral will be held Wednesday, and he will rest at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. © 2025 KTIV. All rights reserved.
