Designed by Pierre Koenig, the cantilevered L‑shaped structure was completed in 1959 for just $37,500, after the Stahls bought the sloping lot in 1954 for $13,500. The home was part of the Arts & Architecture Magazine’s Case Study Program, which produced 25 mass‑produced modernist houses; the Stahl House became Case Study House No. 22.
Within hours of the listing, architect William Baker of The Agency received hundreds of inquiries, proving the price will not deter history and design aficionados. The Stahls, who have lived there for decades, announced the sale on their website, noting that aging has made upkeep increasingly difficult. They will keep offering ticketed tours—booked through February—to help fund maintenance, a practice started 17 years ago.
The house’s floor‑to‑ceiling windows frame Sunset Boulevard and the city beyond, while a bridged outdoor pool separates living and private zones. Inside, a freestanding fireplace sits between kitchen and living room; a plaque commemorates its role in the Case Study Program. The siblings, Bruce and Shari Stahl, wrote a book about growing up in the house, recalling childhood adventures such as wearing life jackets to cross the pool and learning to dive from the roof.
The Stahl House gained fame from a 1950s black‑and‑white photo by Julius Shulman, often called the most iconic image of Los Angeles. The house has since appeared in films like “Columbo” and “Galaxy Quest,” and even served as a safe house in the 2004 video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Baker said the sellers are open to a private or institutional buyer who will respect the home’s legacy. The listing marks the first time this mid‑century icon has ever been offered for sale.
