Indian-Origin Couple's $4M Texas Real Estate Scam Exposed

Indian-Origin Couple in Texas Accused of $4 Million Real Estate Scam

A
n Indian-American couple from Texas, Sidhartha "Sammy" Mukherjee and his wife Sunita, are accused of orchestrating a massive real estate scam that duped over 100 victims out of $4 million. The couple, once prominent in the North Texas community for their flashy appearances and Bollywood-style performances, is now facing first-degree felony theft charges.

According to investigators, the Mukherjees lured investors with promises of high returns on fake real estate projects, providing convincing paperwork that included bogus invoices and remodeling contracts supposedly from the Dallas Housing Authority. However, when dividend cheques began bouncing, victims realized they had been duped.

The case came to light in 2024 when a couple reported losing $325,000. Euless Police Detective Brian Brennan launched an investigation that eventually involved the FBI. Brennan described Sammy Mukherjee as one of the most prolific con artists he's encountered, noting that fake invoices from the Dallas Housing Authority proved the projects never existed.

Victims claim the couple used their public image to gain trust before cheating them out of every penny they had. Authorities believe the total number of victims could surpass 100, with only 20 having come forward so far. The Mukherjees are also accused of emailing elderly victims with threats of arrest unless they made immediate payments and falsifying documents to obtain federal COVID relief funds.

During questioning by the FBI, Sammy Mukherjee denied knowing the names on a payroll tied to a PPP loan. Despite mounting complaints, the couple remained socially active until 2024, when they filed for bankruptcy. Authorities are now investigating whether scammed money was diverted into cryptocurrency or offshore accounts.
