James Dean's NYC Childhood Home for Sale: A Gilded Age Brownstone

Dean's tough image belied his residence in a traditional brownstone at 13 W. 89th St.

J
ames Dean's former Upper West Side home, a stunning 1884 brownstone, is now on the market for $6.25 million. The "Rebel With a Cause" actor lived in this traditional Gilded Age property with his girlfriend Liz "Dizzy" Sheridan in 1951. After their breakup, Sheridan burned many of her memories but later found Dean's New York Public Library card with the brownstone's address.

The home, located at 13 W. 89th St., boasts beautiful outdoor space and features a cozy eat-in open chef's kitchen, an original fireplace in an open living room, and exposed brick walls. The property has been renovated to include a renovated owner's duplex and four rental units, but can also be converted back to single-family use.

Dean often left Hollywood to return to the Upper West Side, even after becoming a star with "East of Eden" and "Rebel Without a Cause." He studied at the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg and Elia Kazan and was known for his fearlessness, which he once said he confronted through reading about bullfighting.

The 19.5-foot-wide residence has 570 square feet of outdoor space and includes two fireplaces, ceiling heights ranging from 8.5 to 12 feet, and original prewar details like wood-framed bay windows. The owner's duplex features a formal living and dining area, home office, and wraparound floating staircase connecting both floors.

The property also includes a two-bedroom apartment on the fourth floor with a private terrace, two one-bedroom units on the top floor, and a garden-level residence with an additional two bedrooms and private garden access. The seller, who bought the property for $4.15 million in 2005, is downsizing now that her kids are out of the house.
