os Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has appointed Steve Soboroff, a prominent developer and former president of the L.A. Police Commission, as chief recovery officer to oversee the rebuilding of Pacific Palisades and surrounding areas devastated by the recent wildfires. The fires, which began on January 7, destroyed or damaged over 16,000 structures, killing at least 27 people and displacing more than 100,000 residents.
Soboroff, who has a long history of civic leadership in Los Angeles, will work closely with Bass to develop a comprehensive strategy for rebuilding and expediting the safe return of residents, businesses, schools, and other essential services. He brings significant experience to the role, having spearheaded major development projects such as Playa Vista and the Crypto.com Arena.
Bass praised Soboroff's expertise, saying "no one is better equipped to create a rebuilding plan" than him. Soboroff expressed his commitment to helping the affected communities, stating that he wants to bring hope to those who are hurting, frustrated, and confused. He acknowledged the devastating impact of the fires on Pacific Palisades, where he has lived for 40 years with his family.
The appointment comes as Bass faces criticism for her handling of the fire disaster, including concerns about the preparedness of the fire department and the availability of water in the affected areas. The city will launch a full investigation into the handling of the fires, and Soboroff's role is seen as a key step towards rebuilding and recovery.
