Lagunitas plans Oakland brewery expansion for new IPA production

Lagunitas Brewing seeks permit to brew in Oakland's 189,000 sq. ft. warehouse space.

L
agunitas Brewing, a pioneer craft beermaker based in Petaluma, is eyeing a new location in Oakland. The company has applied for a beer manufacturer's license at 2001 Maritime Street, a 189,000-square-foot warehouse available for sublease. The warehouse, owned by Prologis, features 16,000 square feet of offices and over 37,000 square feet of refrigerated storage.

The property, marketed by Newmark for sublease through March 2033, includes 5.43 acres of industrial yard space that can be leased separately or together. However, a sublease deal with Lagunitas has not been finalized, according to Newmark.

Lagunitas closed its Chicago manufacturing facility in August and plans to move production to Petaluma. It's unclear if new production in Oakland would add to or replace the brewery in Petaluma. The company's parent, Heineken, acquired Lagunitas in 2017 and has faced challenges including layoffs, employee friction, and declining demand for hop-heavy IPAs.

The Bay Area's largest brewery, founded by Tony Magee in 1993, holds top-selling IPA brands but has struggled in recent years. New CEO Bernardo Spielmann took over this month, replacing Dennis Peek.
