Lendlease Faces Executive Exodus Amid Hayes Point Project Halt

Lendlease loses another top exec as it winds down US West Coast operations.

L
endlease has lost another top executive, with Arden Hearing announcing his departure from the company's San Francisco office. This is the second exit of a local executive this year as Lendlease winds down its Western U.S. operations. Hearing, who joined the Australia-based developer in 2019 to oversee development across the West Coast, will take charge of real estate for Denver-based Alterra Mountain in Colorado.

Hearing's departure follows that of Swathi Bonda, a senior vice president at Lendlease who left over the summer. Bonda had overseen the development of Hayes Point, a $1.15 billion project with a 47-story mixed-use tower at 30 Van Ness Avenue. Construction on the project was halted last year due to poor market conditions.

Lendlease plans to wind down its operations in the Western U.S. as part of a divestment from its U.S. construction business. The company's San Francisco office has around 30 employees, including Claire Johnston and Meg Spriggs, who had worked with Google on a $15 billion plan to develop four neighborhoods in the South Bay.

The partnership between Lendlease and Google began to fray last spring when they paused development of an 80-acre transit village known as Downtown West. The decision was made as tech companies downsized offices during a shift to remote work, and higher interest rates and construction costs hindered homebuilding in Silicon Valley.
