A
200-year-old downtown property on Nantucket Island has sold for $24.8 million, making it one of the most expensive real estate transactions in island history. The six-bedroom, 15-room home at 72 Main Street was built in 1822 and renovated in 2019.
The property, which sits on a .26-acre lot, was originally constructed by John Coleman for whaling merchant John Wendell Barrett. It features three floors, including an east parlor with an original black marble fireplace and a mural, as well as four ensuite bedrooms on the second floor.
The third floor boasts a grand cupola with exposed beams, a generously sized bedroom with harbor views, and an office with a skylight and full bathroom. The property was listed by Maury People Sotheby's International Realty and sold through Bernadette Meyer to the Seventy-Two Main Nominee Trust, a blind trust that conceals the buyer's identity.
The home's description highlights its meticulously preserved history and opulent craftsmanship, with modernization discreetly integrated into the interior. The property offers an "exquisite glimpse into a time when craftsmanship and opulence defined Nantucket's landscape."
