cott Wierda, a seasoned real estate developer and investor, has stepped down as managing partner at CWD Real Estate Investment to launch his own firm, SW Real Estate Investment, in partnership with his 28-year-old son Spencer. The new company will focus on multi-family and mixed-use development, an area where Spencer has gained expertise.
Wierda, who has spent four decades in real estate development, will retain his ownership stake in the CWD Capital property portfolio. He cited a desire to work alongside his son as the reason for the change, calling it "the beginning of what I consider my 'final-final' business chapter." Spencer will serve as president and director of development at SW Real Estate Investment.
The firm has already launched three projects in the Grand Rapids area: Gaslight Village, Breton Meadows, and Burton & Breton. At Gaslight Village, a mixed-use redevelopment is proposed to add residential, retail, and commercial space, while Breton Meadows will feature 168 new apartments with approximately one-third serving attainable housing needs. The project is expected to cost $35 million and take up to two years to complete.
SW Real Estate Investment plans to contract with CWD for property management services. Spencer Wierda expressed excitement about starting the firm, citing his desire to invest in the community that shaped him. He aims to create smart, community-driven development that meets local housing needs and contributes to the area's growth.
