Local officials discuss real estate assessment appeal process

Roanoke City Council gets update on reassessment appeals process.

I
n Roanoke, the final chapter has been written on this year's reassessment appeals process. City Council members received a briefing Monday on the outcome of these appeals, which provided citizens with a chance to contest their property values. According to Kelvin Bratton, Real Estate Valuation Director, "We're giving City Council and residents an update on projected increases after appeal decisions have been made. This is an opportunity for citizens to review and correct any discrepancies in their property information."

A total of 392 appeals were submitted this year, with a combined value exceeding $150 million. These appeals included 33 commercial, 22 multi-family, and 337 residential properties. Bratton reported that 264 of these appeals were sustained, while 128 reassessments were adjusted as a result.

The City of Roanoke's appeal process has now come to a close. However, residents who still wish to contest their property values have until April 7 to submit an appeal to the Board of Equalization. Bratton encouraged citizens to take advantage of this opportunity, stating that it provides an independent review of their complaint.
