Long Island Retailers Abandon Leased Properties

King Kullen to close Levittown store on Hempstead Turnpike after 30-year run.

L
ong Island is losing two major brands as store closures loom. King Kullen, a supermarket chain with 27 locations on the island, is shutting down its Levittown location on Hempstead Turnpike after declining to renew its lease after 30 years. The 48,000-square-foot building's owner, Westbury Properties, is unsure of what's next for the property.

This closure follows King Kullen's recent string of store closures, including three underperforming locations in 2019 and two more in 2022, as well as a natural food store in West Islip last year. Despite this, the family-owned chain still operates on Long Island.

Meanwhile, Showcase Cinemas' Hicksville location is also set to close at the start of next year after National Amusements chose not to renew its lease. The cinema has been in place for about three decades and will be replaced by a redevelopment project planned by investors who purchased the property earlier this year for $40 million.
