AYFIELD, Ky. — Harris Real Estate & Auction sold the former Lowes Elementary School property, which encompasses 50,000 square feet of usable space, on behalf of Graves County Schools.
The auction divided the property into two tracts: a multi-purpose building on 7.32 acres and adjacent vacant land on 7.87 acres. Tract 1, containing the main building, sold for $135,000, while Tract 2 sold for $80,000, totaling $215,000. The combined tracts were appraised at $100,000.
The property features a gymnasium, kitchen and cafeteria, classrooms, offices, restrooms, and storerooms. Harris Real Estate & Auction highlighted potential uses as an event center, storage facility, or office complex.
GCS maintenance director Richard Horn stated that the building has been non-operational since 2021, with students relocated to other schools in the district. The buyer of Tract 1 wished to remain anonymous, while cousins and real estate partners Jeff Burnett and Eugene Burnett from Cunningham, Kentucky purchased Tract 2 for $80,000.
Jeff Burnett expressed interest in developing housing on the land but is still deliberating on a plan. He described the purchase price as satisfactory, given the nature of auctions. The buyers paid 15% down payment and will pay the remaining balance within 30 days. The Graves County School Board will vote on approval at its meeting on October 17.
