Maryland Real Estate Veteran Reveals Keys to Long-Term Success

Mary Wykes, born in the 1920s, drives herself to work daily as one of America's oldest active real estate agents.

ary Wykes, a Maryland woman born in the 1920s, is celebrating her 100th birthday and remains one of the oldest active real estate agents in the country. Every day, she drives herself to work, where she's been selling homes since 1979.

Wykes' decision to become a real estate agent was inspired by her father's advice: "Work for yourself." After nearly two decades working in the federal government and various other jobs, Wykes made the switch at age 54. She said it was the perfect way to put her father's words into action.

"I love the people I work with," Wykes said of her job. Her boss at Long and Foster praised her as "positive, inspirational, and fastidious" about her work. At 100 years old, Wykes is still earning commission checks and showing no signs of slowing down.

Wykes credits her family's longevity – her mother lived to 99, an aunt was 100, and a great-uncle reached 105 – as well as good genes, luck, and a positive attitude for her own long life. She advises others to "take one day at a time" and believe in the kindness of people.

Wykes has no plans to retire anytime soon. In fact, she just ordered new business cards. On Saturday, she'll celebrate her milestone birthday with friends and family, including great-grandchildren.
