hode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha has reached a $213,000 settlement with A.R. Building Company (ARBC), Inc., a national real estate management corporation accused of charging illegal application fees to prospective tenants in the state.
The agreement requires ARBC to refund $98,250 to affected consumers and pay Rhode Island $114,750. As part of the settlement, ARBC will stop charging application fees, cease asking about disabilities, and provide clear disclosure of screening documents to prospective tenants.
"This settlement not only returns nearly $100,000 to Rhode Island consumers but also prevents this company from engaging in alleged illegal and discriminatory practices," said AG Neronha. "My Office will continue to hold accountable those who prioritize profits over people, making it easier for individuals to find safe and affordable housing."
Consumers who paid application or administrative fees between January 1, 2024, and January 30, 2025, should contact their relevant ARBC property manager to claim a refund.
