ithios, a cleantech company founded by MIT engineers, has relocated from an incubator lab at MIT's "The Engine" in Cambridge to a 8,000 square foot space in Medford. The new headquarters, situated on Cummings Properties' Boston Avenue innovation campus, will house the firm's administrative and research functions.
Lithios is pioneering a clean method of lithium extraction, a crucial resource for electric vehicles and heavy machinery adoption. Co-founder and CEO Dr. Mo Alkahadra developed the technology with his Ph.D. advisor, MIT professor Martin Bazant. The company has operated under a two-year Activate Fellowship since its founding in 2022.
Cummings Properties worked closely with Lithios to lease and customize the new space, which features pilot and testing areas as well as a machine shop. "Medford is becoming an attractive location for startups," said Al Diamond, Cummings' business development director. "Growing companies like Lithios can tap into the local talent pool and enjoy lower costs compared to Boston or Cambridge."
The Medford innovation campus offers move-in-ready lab and office space with upgraded finishes, free parking, and on-site MBTA bus access. The area is within walking distance of the Green Line extension, restaurants, shops, and other amenities.
