Michael Keaton's Real Estate Empire: A Glimpse into His Luxurious Properties

The Hollywood A-lister's California properties: A glimpse into his diverse real estate portfolio

M
ichael Keaton, a well-known actor, has always felt a strong connection to Montana's open air. He has owned several properties in California but his Montana ranch remains his favorite place on earth. In Pacific Palisades, he has a sprawling single-family home built in 1951, which he purchased in 1987 for $1.3 million. The four-bedroom, four-bathroom home spans 3,584 square feet and includes a two-car garage on approximately 0.57 acres of land. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he spent time quarantining in this house, likely to be close to his son Sean Douglas.

In Santa Barbara County, California, Keaton also owns a 2,292-square-foot cottage in Montecito, which he bought in 1989 for $1.5 million. He remembers his first visit to California in the late 1970s when he had only $280. He bought a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle for $700 and slept on the beach with friends. He recalls how horses walked along the streets and through the town, which made him want to move there even more.

In Summerland, he purchased a 19-acre ranch in 2016 for $5 million. The property features a 2,000-square-foot cottage with a two-car garage, patio, and ocean views. It also has a stable and various fenced-off areas, making it perfect for his horses. The property is located near Montecito’s riding trails, allowing him easy access to the beach for horseback riding.

Keaton's dream home in McLeod, Montana, is his primary residence. He designed the house himself and served as the general contractor. He purchased the land and started from scratch, sleeping in a tent or his pickup truck while he mapped out his ideal digs. The reconstructed and refurbished cabin now serves as a guesthouse on his 1,000-acre estate.

Keaton worked closely with interior designers Helen Kent and Julie Iverson to create a rustic retreat that felt homey but also had enough room for his relatives and year-round staff. He didn't want a "nouveau cowboy house" but rather a place with its own personality. The wide porch leads to an interior that combines contemporary appliances with distressed fixtures, providing ample closet space for outdoorsy equipment like fishing rods and skis. The most important feature of his home is what's outside - the breathtaking views of the mountains surrounding the endless terrain.
