mericans are flocking to Portugal, a small European country on the west coast that offers a tranquil beach-filled lifestyle. According to a recent survey by expat resource group Expatsi, Portugal tops the list of destinations where Americans most hope to move, driven by a desire to escape the US's high cost of living, daily stress, and perceived political divisiveness.
Portugal's popularity can be attributed to its welcoming programs for foreigners, including tax benefits and visas. Although these benefits have been scaled back, the country still offers a lower cost of living, improved quality of life, increased safety, and warm locals. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are among the high-profile expats who have made Portugal their home.
The Expatsi survey found that 56% of respondents believe the US has become too conservative, while 53% think it's too divided politically. Elizabeth Burke, a Washington, DC resident, is one of many Americans dreaming of a life in Portugal. She visits annually and plans to retire there within five years, drawn by the country's sense of calm and happiness.
Portugal's compact size allows for easy exploration of its diverse regions, from wine-producing hills to expansive beaches and green mountains. The locals are known for their hospitality, with Burke praising them as "the nicest people" who want to ensure visitors have everything they need.
However, getting residency in Portugal has become more challenging since the country phased out its Golden Visa program through real estate investment in 2024. Alternative qualifying investments include funds, donations, or job creation, while the D7 retirement visa requires proof of passive income and minimum stay requirements.
Despite the increased competition for housing, Portugal remains a desirable destination for US retirees, offering a pleasant climate, good public health services, and affordable private healthcare options. While locals are beginning to express concerns about the influx of expats driving up property prices, Burke is taking Portuguese lessons and plans to assimilate into local life if she can secure a visa.
