B
ob Merrick, the chairman and CEO of Latter & Blum Inc., passed away on Monday at 80 after a lengthy battle with cancer. A businessman, civic leader, and philanthropist, Merrick grew New Orleans-based Latter & Blum into one of the largest commercial and residential brokerages in the Gulf South before selling it last year.
Merrick was known for his razor-sharp mind, tireless work ethic, and generosity to New Orleans and Louisiana charities. In 2014, he made a $1 million gift to the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, becoming the first person to do so. Five years later, he received The Times-Picayune Loving Cup.
Friends and business colleagues described Merrick as an "unbelievable individual" who cared deeply about the city and its people. Developer Paul Flower said, "I don't know anyone who has donated as much time, energy, and money to the community as Bob has."
Merrick came from humble roots, beginning his career in real estate while still in high school after his father's death. He graduated from Tulane University in 1967 and served two years in the U.S. Air Force before returning to the industry, shifting his focus from appraising property to developing and brokering industrial space.
In 1986, Merrick purchased Latter & Blum, which he expanded through mergers with brokerages across the state and eventually grew into Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. At its peak, the company's sales volume topped $6 billion.
Merrick was remembered for his ability to find great deals and his willingness to partner with others on projects. His daughter, Lacey Merrick Conway, who succeeded him as CEO in 2019, said he was "adored by so many" and gave much to the city he loved.
Over the years, Merrick supported numerous organizations, including the Red Cross, University of New Orleans, Ochsner Health System, and Habitat for Humanity. He received several honors, including the National Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year Award and The Times-Picayune Loving Cup.
Merrick is survived by his wife and four daughters. Funeral arrangements are pending.
