ew York is experiencing a mass exodus, with 59% of its residents leaving for other states in 2024, making it the third most abandoned state in the country. This trend continues from previous years, including 2023 when it ranked fourth highest for out-migration.
The United Van Lines National Movers Study reveals that New Yorkers are seeking greener pastures, with Florida being a top destination for nearly one in five former residents. The main reasons for leaving include family ties, retirement dreams, and better job opportunities.
New Jersey takes the top spot for the seventh consecutive year as the state with the most departures, with 67% of movers heading out. Florida is also a popular choice for those fleeing New Jersey, with 20% making their way there.
Despite the exodus, New York still attracts new residents, with 41% of movers coming to the state in 2024. Many are drawn by family or career changes, and among these newcomers, 52.8% earn more than $150,000 a year.
Across the US, people are leaving high-cost cities for cheaper, less crowded areas, with Sunbelt states like South Carolina and Alabama gaining popularity. As housing costs continue to rise, Americans are seeking lower-density, more affordable regions, according to Michael A. Stoll, a public policy professor at UCLA.
