T
wo roommates, Audrey Stasko and Maggie Gholston, have shared a glimpse into their tiny New York City apartment, which they affectionately call a "shoebox." The 22-year-olds, who graduated from Auburn University, traded spacious Alabama homes for an extra-small pad in Manhattan. Despite loving their lives in the Big Apple, they admit it's taken time to adjust to the cramped quarters.
Their apartment is particularly small, with hallways so narrow that the women can barely fit down them and only a single coat closet for storage. In a viral TikTok video, Gholston shimmies down the hallway to their apartment door due to the tight space. The roommates joke about the "grand foyer," which is actually just a small entrance area.
The bathroom is one of the largest rooms in the apartment, and it's also where they store some of their belongings. Gholston showcases the only closet in the apartment, which is built-in at the front of the space. The roommates' bedrooms are similarly tiny, with Stasko's room featuring a small clothing rack and under-the-bed storage.
To maximize their space, the women have stored some items under their couch and made use of every available inch. Stasko has a makeup setup by her window, which includes a tiny stool in place of a chair. Despite the challenges of living in such a small space, the roommates seem to be making it work.
Their apartment meets New York City's legal standards for a bedroom, which requires at least 80 square feet and an 8-foot ceiling. However, there is no requirement for homes to have a closet, so Stasko and Gholston's apartment satisfies these requirements. The roommates' video has sparked questions from viewers about their tiny space, but they haven't responded to the comments.
This isn't the first time New Yorkers have taken to TikTok to showcase their small apartments. A woman who pays $3,200 a month for her studio apartment in the West Village revealed that it doesn't even have room for an oven. Another New Yorker shared a video of her "toilet sink," where the water is operated by the toilet flush. These videos demonstrate the creative ways people are finding to make the most of their small spaces in the city.
