T
he historic Friedens Church in Jackson, Wisconsin has been undergoing a remarkable restoration project led by Steve Kissinger since 2017. The church, built in 1878, had fallen into disrepair and was purchased by Kissinger with the intention of preserving its history and beauty.
Kissinger's passion for woodworking is evident in the stunning pieces he's created from reclaimed wood, including a baptismal font, altar, lectern, and series of handcrafted crosses. He's also repurposed materials like old cans to create unique decorative elements, such as the candles that bookend the altar.
The church's pipe organ has been relocated inside, with Kissinger working on its installation in the choir loft. His goal is to complete the restoration by the time he retires within the next year. He envisions turning the church into a personal museum showcasing his vast collection of items, including products from the West Bend Aluminum Company.
Despite the challenges ahead, Kissinger remains committed to preserving the church's original charm and character. If the steeple cannot be saved, he plans to rebuild it in its 1878 appearance, earning him the nickname "St. Stevens" among friends. As work continues on the historic building, visitors can already hear the sound of a WWII pump organ playing hymns like "Stand up for Jesus."
