A
six-bedroom, 4,623-square-foot estate in Sands Point, Long Island's Gold Coast, is set to be auctioned off with a minimum reserve bid of $5.5 million. The property at 27 Astor Lane boasts 200 feet on the beach and features a unique stainless steel corkscrew slide that doubles as a fire escape.
The home was built in 1913 as a retreat for nuns, but was later modernized by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier in 1971. Meier's design transformed the property into a sleek, modern dwelling with curved end pieces and a white exterior. The interior features double-height ceilings, a triple-height dining room, and a double-height living room.
The estate includes a pool, a tennis court, landscaped gardens with century-old trees, and a historic icehouse. A two-story boathouse/guest house on the beach was once the nuns' locker room, while a carriage house has been converted into a seven-car garage. The property also features a staff house, a poolside cabana, and a tennis court.
The estate's current owners, a Maidman family trust, are selling due to their reduced presence in the area. "We aren't there enough," said Harry Maidman, his grandson. "Our family is now spread out across the country." The auction will be held on November 14 by Paramount Realty USA with Serhant brokers Rachel King and Chase Landow.
The property's unique features and stunning views make it a rare find in the area. As Harry Maidman noted, "It was a kid's dream, with boating in summer and sledding in winter. It was a very idyllic place to spend the weekend."
