A
luxury condo unit in Zaha Hadid's only New York City building is on the market for $3.7 million, according to a StreetEasy listing update. The 11-story condominium at 520 W. 28th St. boasts an eye-catching facade with bold lines and organic curves, characteristic of Hadid's dynamic style.
Located along the picturesque High Line, the building was one of Hadid's final creations before her death in 2016. She was a pioneering architect who broke barriers as a woman in a male-dominated field. Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger described her as an ardent feminist with a commanding personality and uncompromising vision.
The 1,691-square-foot unit is the only one on its floor, featuring five rooms, two bedrooms, and 2.5 bathrooms. It boasts 50 feet of floor-to-ceiling motorized windows overlooking 28th Street. The building's residents enjoy access to a private IMAX theater, a terrace on the High Line, a 75-foot swimming pool, a gym, and more.
Hadid designed the West Chelsea building as an "extension of the pavement," with a connection to the High Line that would make a gesture towards the neighborhood. Her philosophy was about freedom in design, mixing bold lines and fluid curves into futuristic structures. Goldberger noted that the building successfully combined Hadid's unique style with practical needs.
The condominium has had notable residents, including Sting and Trudie Styler as early renters, and American businessman Wes Edens who purchased a 6,853-square-foot penthouse for $20 million in 2020. Related Companies' investment in the project initially struggled to sell but eventually found success.
Goldberger described the construction of 520 W. 28th St. as a big risk taken by Related Companies, which also built nearby Hudson Yards around the same time. The building is now an admired structure that showcases Hadid's innovative design.
