Witkoff's appointment as Middle East envoy was reportedly sparked by a conversation between him and Trump during lunch. His deal-making skills were also on display during Trump's 2024 campaign, where he helped ease tensions between Trump and his defeated rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Witkoff has also served on various boards, including the University of Miami's business school real estate advisory board and the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
