Realtor.com and CoStar Settle Trade Secrets Dispute

Realtor.com accuses former employee of stealing confidential business information to aid CoStar.

A
high-stakes trade secrets dispute between Realtor.com and CoStar has reached a quiet resolution. The lawsuit, which centered on allegations of intellectual property theft by a former Realtor.com employee who joined Homes.com in 2024, was jointly dismissed by the parties in a U.S. District Court filing.

Realtor.com maintained that James Kaminsky, the ex-employee at the center of the dispute, had accessed company documents after his termination and that CoStar's continued employment of him posed a risk to their intellectual property. However, Realtor.com has now settled with Kaminsky, who is no longer employed by CoStar.

The dismissal filing reveals that both parties agreed to drop all claims against each other, with each responsible for their own attorney fees. This outcome comes after a series of setbacks for Realtor.com in the court, including the rejection of a preliminary injunction and the dismissal of two claims related to alleged Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) and Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act (CCDAFA) violations.

CoStar CEO Andy Florance had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, calling the lawsuit a "nasty PR stunt" with "innocent victims." He claimed that Realtor.com's parent company, News Corp, was motivated by a desire to hurt CoStar and Homes.com in the competitive real estate market.
