K
eith McNally recalls a meeting with Donald Trump years ago, where the real estate mogul was "very decent" but "not too bright." The restaurateur shares this anecdote in his new memoir, I Regret Almost Everything. In the book, McNally recounts trying to buy restaurant space from Trump on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Trump showed him several overdecorated spaces before pointing out a less gaudy one that was already taken, but "not locked in." McNally notes that even back then, Trump seemed like a caricature of a rich New Yorker with questionable taste.
McNally also reveals that Trump was a regular at his NYC hotspot, Balthazar, for two years after its 1997 opening. He describes Trump as decent but not intelligent, and says he would have thought someone who predicted Trump's presidency was crazy. McNally hopes readers will take away from his book the idea that it's okay to change your mind and question conventional wisdom on topics like family relationships and the importance of vacations. His memoir is out Tuesday, May 6, and available for preorder now.
