A
regional housing authority has acquired a 1.1-acre property in Downtown San Jose to build a 103-unit affordable housing complex, with plans to break ground this year or early next year. The $4.1 million purchase price was paid by an affiliate of the Santa Clara County Housing Authority for the lot at 715 East St. John Street.
The proposed Hawthorn Senior Apartments will feature a four-story building with 101 affordable units and two market-rate units for managers. Of the affordable apartments, 20 will be reserved for homeless individuals and families with special needs, while 27 will cater to seniors earning up to 30% of the area median income (AMI). The remaining 54 units will be allocated to senior households earning up to 50% of AMI.
The project's design includes common areas with a shared computer room on the ground floor, community spaces and laundry facilities on the second floor, an outdoor courtyard with garden plots for residents, and a total construction cost of $76.1 million. The Housing Authority has secured $61.6 million in construction financing, although details about any co-developers involved were not disclosed.
