estbank, a Vancouver-based developer with multiple residential projects in Downtown San Jose, has partnered with PG&E to build data centers that can supply heat to up to 4,100 homes. The innovative approach involves building housing towers adjacent to data centers, which would utilize excess heat generated by the power-hungry facilities to warm nearby residences. This concept is part of a larger strategy for an eco-friendly Downtown San Jose.

    The idea has garnered attention from experts who see it as a way to combine solutions for housing, energy, and environmental challenges. PG&E CEO Patricia Poppe expressed enthusiasm for powering the new developments, stating that this initiative could catalyze investment in housing. Westbank plans to build 4,100 homes in Downtown San Jose, with at least two of its projects featuring stand-alone data centers that would harness excess heat from tech facilities.

    San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan praised the proposal, highlighting its potential to address two major challenges: housing and energy conservation. The project could be a net-zero energy endeavor, leveraging computing power from the data center to capture excess heat for neighboring high-rise developments. Westbank has proposed building data centers next to three 30-story housing towers in the SoFa District, as well as a 17-story apartment complex in North San Pedro.
