Seaside Jersey Shore motel with secret charm for sale after seven decades of family ownership

Family-owned motel celebrates 70 years of operation with 45 rooms.

T
he Windswept Motel in Point Pleasant Beach, a 45-room oceanfront property that has been in the Mahan family for 70 years, is on the market for $10.5 million. The motel's owner, Ron Mahan, 81, is retiring after decades of operation. Jeanette Schlapfer of Shire Realtor, the listing agent, describes the facility as having "love and attention to every inch" with four buildings, including a four-bedroom residence where Mahan lives.

The property sits on .87 acres, adjacent to a beach path and within walking distance to downtown shops, galleries, restaurants, and more. When Mahan purchased it in 1976, the motel had 24 rooms; he added six more in 1980 and another 15 in 1995 after buying the neighboring property.

The motel has a loyal clientele, with at least 80% of guests being repeat visitors. Some people spend nearly every weekend of the year at Windswept Motel, said Tempe Mahan, Ron's daughter. The staff is also remarkably stable, with some employees having worked there for over 25 years.

The property features an in-ground oceanfront pool and a parking lot with 56 spots. Since listing last July, Schlapfer has received interest from potential buyers who want to operate the motel or develop it into something else. "Things like this don't come up every day," she said. "It's just a gem."
