A
one-of-a-kind house with a 25ft shark protruding from its roof is now available to rent for $5,000 per month. The property, known as the Shark House, was previously used as an Airbnb rental but has been banned by Oxford Council due to planning regulations.
The four-bedroom, four-bathroom Victorian home in Headington, Oxfordshire, features a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, SKY TV, and fast Wi-Fi, along with off-street parking. The property listing describes it as "a dive into a piece of living art history" and invites renters to experience the comfort of modern living while surrounded by a unique story.
The Shark House has been a local landmark since 1986, when its late owner's father, Bill Heine, constructed the shark sculpture without official planning permission. The property was previously rented out on Airbnb for short-term stays, but Dr. Magnus Hanson-Heine, the current owner, lost an appeal to continue using it as a holiday let.
The council has defended its decision, citing concerns about the loss of valuable homes in Oxford due to the rise of short-term rentals. Councillor Linda Smith stated that there are nearly 3,500 households on the waiting list for social housing in Oxford and that properties should be used for people to live in, not as holiday accommodation.
The Shark House will be available to rent from March 5, 2025, with bills included and students welcome to inquire.
