Skanska Joint Venture Wins $625M Design-Build Contract for RI's I-95 Upgrade

Skanska Joint Venture Awarded $625 Million Contract in Providence, RI.

S
kanska, a global construction leader, has partnered with McCourt Construction and AETNA Bridge Company on a $625 million contract awarded by Rhode Island's Department of Transportation (RIDOT) for the design-build of the I-95 15 project. This ambitious undertaking will modernize 15 bridges along I-95 and Route 10 between Providence and Warwick, a critical transportation hub that sees 185,000 vehicles daily.

The project aims to revitalize key infrastructure components, alleviate traffic congestion, and enhance safety in one of Rhode Island's busiest corridors. According to Paul Pedini, Skanska USA Civil's New England region senior vice president, "We're thrilled to be part of this complex design-build mega project." The project's cost is offset by a $251 million federal Bridge Investment Program grant.

Upon completion, the I-95 15 project will achieve significant improvements: reducing poor-rated bridges by 7.6%, decreasing total deck area of poor-rated bridges by 17.5%, and removing permit restrictions affecting most truck freight. The project will also enhance the flow of 45.2 billion tons of annual truck freight and eliminate three of Rhode Island's top five structurally deficient bridges.

Construction began in August 2024, with a projected substantial completion date of August 2030.
