Slinger Landmark Closes Doors at Jim's Place

VIDEO: Saying Goodbye to Jim's Place in Slinger, Wisconsin

O
n October 14th, families and friends gathered for one last visit to Jim's Place in Slinger, a beloved corner pizza and ice cream shop that will soon be relocating to Mayville. Mark Kuehl and his wife Kathleen have run the business for 17 years, but rising rent at their current location forced them to make the difficult decision to close.

As customers arrived, they were greeted with name tags reading "Hello... my name is Jim," a nod to the shop's history and legacy. The iconic business will reopen in Mayville under new ownership, with Kuehl operating out of Atwell's Pub on Dayton Street. A new name for the business is expected to be announced soon.

Kuehl expressed his sadness at leaving behind a community that has supported Jim's Place for generations. "This is an iconic place," he said. "I didn't start it, but I'm proud of what we've built." The shop's towering flavor burst cones and homemade pizzas have become staples in the area, attracting visitors from around the world.

The Kuehls' lease at their current location runs through October 31st, but they will be closing on October 13th to celebrate with an "End-of-an Era" party. The event is open to everyone, and will take place from 11am-7pm.

Jim's Place has a rich history in the community, dating back to its origins as a bakery in West Bend. Jim Herther, the namesake of the business, started City Bakery in 1973 and later moved to Slinger, where he opened the original Jim's Place with his wife Brenda. The shop quickly became a staple in the area, known for its fresh-baked goods and homemade ice cream.

After selling the business to Mark Kuehl in 2000, Herther reflected on the shop's history and legacy. "We made everything from scratch," he said. "It was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it." The VFW plans to remodel the space and find a new tenant, with Chris Ellenbecker available for inquiries at 304-400-3196.
