Stairway to Luxury: Charming Summit Hill Home Lists for $490K

Newer Home Offers Affordable Option with Unique Access via Stairs.

T
he Star Tribune reports on a unique property in St. Paul's Summit Hill neighborhood, where architect Paul Ormseth built his dream home in 2008. The two-bedroom, one-bathroom house spans 1,410 square feet and is now on the market for $489,500. Current owner Joseph Alton, former editor of Growler Magazine, is selling to focus on his Wisconsin farm.

The home's location, accessible only by climbing up or down 77 steep stairs, may be a drawback for some buyers. However, the city maintains the stairs and nearby street parking is available. The property has been a host's dream, with an open floor plan and plenty of seating in the courtyard.

Architect Paul Ormseth built the home using natural and recycled materials, designing it to be energy efficient. He used salvaged chalkboards as flooring in the foyer and cork lines the steps leading to the kitchen. The living space has views of the Mississippi River through windows stretching from the dining room to the kitchen.

Listing agent Anna Garnaas-Halvorson notes that potential buyers will either love or hate the unique property. "It's probably the most unique house ever," she said. "I almost feel like I'm in a treehouse in there, and I love how it's so cozy in its spaces."

The home has been well-maintained by Alton, who hasn't made any renovations since moving in over a decade ago. He praises the sturdy materials and durable finishes. The property feels like an oasis in the city, with a clear panoramic view of downtown St. Paul from the lofted bedroom.

Anna Garnaas-Halvorson of RE/Max Results has the listing for $489,500.
