The City of Staunton is poised to embark on a new financial journey, with a proposed budget that tackles pressing needs and ambitious projects. A real estate tax increase is part of the equation, but it won't be the only story. The current rate of $0.89 per $100 in home value will rise to $0.91, affecting property owners like those with a $300,000 home, who can expect an additional $60 on their tax bill.

Public Works, which faced setbacks after losing its executive director in 2024, is getting back on track. The budget allocates funds for the "Trash Talk" project, a modernized waste management system that will benefit residents. Meanwhile, education takes center stage as the city school budget receives a significant boost of over $1 million.

New positions at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in the West End are also funded, along with essential repairs to the water tunnel that temporarily shut down the Wharf. This comprehensive approach aims to address pressing needs while laying the groundwork for future growth.
