n a significant milestone for the community, the NAACP Staunton Branch welcomed its new leadership team on January 21st. The ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the organization, which has been a stalwart advocate for social justice and civil rights in the region. Sabrina Burress, Nadia Ware, Alonzo Taylor, Bishop Michael Turner, and Susan Venable were sworn in as branch president, first vice president, treasurer, secretary, and assistant secretary respectively.
The new leadership team is committed to upholding the NAACP's core values and continuing its vital work in the community. They plan to engage with local youth by reinstating the youth council, partnering with organizations focused on youth development, and providing opportunities for young people to take on leadership roles. This initiative aligns with the outgoing president Kenneth Venable's priority of building a strong foundation for future generations.
The branch's priorities include expanding community outreach and membership engagement, creating opportunities for youth leadership development, establishing a scholarship program, collaborating with local businesses to promote economic equity, and enhancing advocacy efforts in education, health equity, housing, and voter rights. The team is confident that their collective voices will make a significant impact in the fight for civil rights.
The City of Staunton Assessor's Office has completed the 2025 real estate reassessment, with notices being mailed to property owners this week. The total increase in valuation across taxable properties is 16.42%, reflecting the current housing market trends. Properties continue to sell for more than they did two years ago due to high demand and limited supply.
The Shenandoah Valley Art Center is showcasing the works of artist Mae Stoll, who has been drawn to representational landscapes and challenges herself with different painting styles and techniques. Her art is exhibited at local galleries, including the Rockfish Valley Gallery in Afton and the Cabell Gallery for Virginia Art in Lexington.
In celebration of Transit Equity Day, BRITE Bus is offering free rides on all routes, including the Afton Express, to promote accessible public transportation. The event honors Civil Rights icon Rosa Parks' courageous acts in fighting for equitable transportation.
The Shenandoah Valley Art Center is also hosting its 12th Annual 40UNDER40 exhibit, featuring 40 works from Virginia-based artists aged 40 and under who push boundaries in terms of subject, materials, or themes.
