Sunrise gets OK for new 100-bed hospital by Baptist Health

Baptist Health wins approval for new 100-bed hospital in Sunrise, Florida's largest city without one.

B
aptist Health South Florida has secured approval for a 100-bed hospital in Sunrise, a city with a population of around 90,000 but no existing hospital. The Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital will be built on a 25-acre development site at 12401 West Oakland Park Boulevard, which the city sold to Baptist Health two years ago for $14.3 million.

The hospital's construction is expected to cost approximately $500 million and create around 600 jobs. Bo Boulenger, president and CEO of Baptist Health, stated that the project will be a significant investment in the community. The site plan approved by the Sunrise City Commission includes a seven-story hospital and a five-story parking garage.

Baptist Health beat out two other bidders, Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare, for the development site. The city commissioners favored Baptist Health's bid due to unkept promises from Broward Health to build a hospital in Sunrise. The city will receive about seven times the price it paid for the land when it sold it to Baptist Health.

The hospital is designed as a full-service facility with 370,000 square feet of interior space, including an emergency department, pharmacy, laboratory, and surgery suite. The design aims to minimize noise and light pollution in nearby residential areas by positioning the ambulance bays and energy plant on the west side of the site.
