Texas Senator Seeks Probe of Muslim-Backed Development Project

Sen. John Cornyn calls for investigation into Dallas-area real estate development over potential non-Muslim rights violations.

T
exas Senator John Cornyn has written to the US Department of Justice, urging an investigation into EPIC City, a Muslim-led real estate development near Josephine, Texas. Cornyn claims that the community may discriminate against non-Muslim Texans, violating their constitutional rights and the Fair Housing Act.

In his letter, Cornyn expressed concerns that the master-planned community could prevent Jewish and Christian Texans from living there, potentially infringing on their constitutional rights. However, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has condemned Cornyn's call as discriminatory and baseless.

CAIR argues that Texas officials are singling out Muslims for political gain, violating the First Amendment's free exercise clause and the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. The organization has sent its own letter to the DOJ, requesting a civil rights investigation into what it describes as "unconstitutional targeting of Muslim communities."

The situation has escalated with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announcing an expansion of his own investigation into EPIC City. Paxton is already investigating Community Capital Partners, the developer behind EPIC City and EPIC City Ranches, which was founded by former leaders of the East Plano Islamic Center.

Paxton's move comes amid a heated Republican primary battle for Cornyn's Senate seat, with Paxton challenging Cornyn in the election. The controversy has also drawn attention from Governor Greg Abbott, who has asked the Texas Rangers to investigate the mosque and associated businesses. CAIR has called these investigations "politically motivated" and designed to chill Muslim civic engagement.
