T
he State Bar of Texas is set to break ground on a $20 million education and conference facility near the Capitol Building. The project, designed by Lawrence Group Architects, will transform the historic Bartholomew-Robinson Building at 1415 Lavaca Street into a modern hub for lawyers visiting Austin. Workspaces, a lecture hall, conference rooms, and a patio will be added to the existing structure, which has stood since the 1880s.
The project involves partial demolition and additions to the building's iconic triple towers with mansard roofs. A glass-enclosed stairwell will connect the historic section to a new three-story addition. The State Bar purchased the building for $3.25 million in 2021 after plans for a Hilton hotel on top of the structure were scrapped.
Preservationists, who opposed the hotel plan, have supported the State Bar's proposal. The development is part of a larger revitalization effort in the area, with the Texas Facilities Commission building out its Capitol Complex project nearby. This master plan aims to transform 40 blocks around the Capitol Building into a vibrant hub with office buildings and amenities.
