D Vance, 40, is making history as the second-youngest vice president in American history. He and his wife, Usha, are leaving behind their Cincinnati home to move into the Vice Presidential residence at 1 Observatory Circle on the grounds of the US Naval Observatory.
The six-bedroom, 9,150-square-foot Queen Anne-style mansion has been the official VP residence since 1974. It features a wraparound porch, green shutters, and a turret, with a picturesque view of the surrounding 12 acres. The ground floor includes a dining room, reception hall, living room, and garden room, while the second and third floors have additional bedrooms.
The house is filled with artwork, including pieces on loan from museums such as Helen Frankenthaler's "Lush Spring" and Andrew Wyeth's "Siri." Previous VPs' families have renovated the home since the 1970s. The backyard features a vine-covered gazebo, heated swimming pool, and pool house.
Built in 1893 for $20,000 (equivalent to about $575,000 today), the house has undergone significant renovations over the years. Vice President Kamala Harris spent $458,597 on home improvements in 2020. The official VP residence was established during Richard Nixon's term when housing prices near DC became a burden.
Residents have praised the house as an "amazing place," with Al Gore's wife, Tipper Gore, calling it a treat to live there. Past VPs who have called the house home include the Mondales, Gores, and Bushes.
