Trump alleges Schiff involved in mortgage irregularities

President Trump accuses Sen. Adam Schiff of mortgage fraud over real estate holdings.

C
alifornia Senator Adam Schiff has dismissed President Trump's allegations of mortgage fraud as "political retaliation" and a "smear". The president accused Schiff of misleading lenders about his primary residence to secure a cheaper mortgage. However, an investigation by Fannie Mae found that Schiff engaged in a "sustained pattern of possible occupancy misrepresentation", but did not conclude that a crime had been committed or use the word "fraud".

Schiff claims Trump's accusations are an attempt to distract from scrutiny over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The senator has faced criticism and calls for impeachment from Trump since leading the first impeachment proceedings against him. Schiff sees the latest allegations as a weak attempt at revenge, saying they won't stop him from holding Trump accountable.

The Fannie Mae investigation was cited by Trump, but its findings were more nuanced than he suggested. The document noted that Schiff had sometimes listed both his home in Maryland and California as his primary residence, leading to "possible occupancy misrepresentation" on his loans between 2009 and 2020. However, the investigators did not conclude a crime had been committed or use the word "fraud".
