ew York City Mayor Eric Adams may find an unlikely ally in Donald Trump, who has hinted at a possible pardon for the embattled mayor. During a news conference at Mar-a-Lago on Monday, Trump said he would "consider" a pardon when asked about Adams' case, despite admitting to not knowing the specifics of the charges against him.
Adams and Trump have shown signs of mutual support in the past. After Trump's election, Adams expressed his willingness to work with the Trump administration, despite running a left-leaning city. He also curtailed a migrant credit card program that was seen as a shift on the wider migrant crisis, which was a focus of Trump's campaign.
Both men are facing their own legal challenges, which may be drawing them closer together. Trump has been battling investigations in his home state of New York, while Adams is fighting bribery charges stemming from an alleged scheme to receive luxury travel and fraudulent campaign donations.
Adams pleaded not guilty to five criminal charges in September, including receiving illegal campaign contributions from foreign nationals and construction executives who routed funds through individuals to circumvent donation limits. He has also been accused of helping benefactors secure city approvals for construction projects despite warnings about safety concerns.
Trump's comments on Monday came as Adams' top aide, Ingrid Lewis-Martin, abruptly resigned, reportedly expecting to be indicted imminently. The scandal continues to drag in real estate figures, including hotelier Mayank Dwivedi and broker Diana Boutross, who was responsible for city leases. The Campaign Finance Board has also denied the mayor's campaign any matching funds, crippling his re-election bid.
