illow is set to introduce climate risk data into its US property listings, including information on wildfires, flooding, extreme temperatures, high winds, and poor air quality. This feature will also highlight required or recommended insurance types for each property. The data, provided through a partnership with First Street, will be available on Zillow's website and iOS app by the end of the year, and on its Android app early next year.
Currently, 16.7% of new listings are at high risk of wildfire, while 12.8% face major flooding risks, according to Zillow. To raise awareness, the search map will be updated with color-coded highlights indicating areas prone to these five key risks. Each risk will have its own color scale to indicate severity.
When viewing a listing, home shoppers will see a climate risk section detailing specific risks for that property and forecasted future severity. This will help buyers understand potential insurance costs over time. First Street notes that 78% of homes flooded by Hurricane Debby were in areas without mandatory flood insurance, but would have been flagged with an insurance recommendation under Zillow's new assessments – a rate of 85%.
