The joint serial refurbishment project by ecoworks and Dawonia in Nuremberg has for the first time been awarded DGNB Silver certification and the Quality Seal for Sustainable Building (QNG). This represents a precedent for the application of serial refurbishment methods. Furthermore, the project is the first in the context of serial refurbishments to achieve the Sustainability Class (NH-Klasse) of the Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG).
The awarding of the QNG seal signifies recognised proof of sustainability, which not only documents compliance with high quality standards but also validly demonstrates the long-term ecological and economic viability of the refurbishment solution used. Emanuel Heisenberg, founder and CEO of ecoworks, emphasised that the achieved NH-Klasse enables a redemption grant of 5 percent within the framework of KfW funding for the current project and for subsequent projects of their clients.
The project by ecoworks and Dawonia encompassed three multi-family houses built in 1966 in Nuremberg. These properties comprise a total living area of 4,799 square metres, spread across 72 residential units. The goal was to implement the demanding KfW-Effizienzhaus-55-NH standards. Sebastian Gefeller, COO of Dawonia, highlighted that the successful fulfilment of these standards by the project teams involved is to be regarded as unique in this form.
The confirmed DGNB Silver certification, including the QNG seal, affirms the realisation of the stated ambition. The project achieves an overall fulfilment rate of over 50 percent, with a peak value of approximately 76 percent in the area of ecology. This sets new benchmarks for serially refurbished existing buildings.
Dr. Christine Lemaitre, Managing Director of DGNB, commented on the potential of serial refurbishment. This offers an option to integrate sustainability standards more quickly into the existing building stock. Through a high degree of prefabrication and standardisation, quality requirements can be systematically implemented and transparently demonstrated by means of certifications. Consequently, there is significant potential to secure the quality of refurbishments through certification processes and to make sustainable solutions more widely accessible with the help of serial technologies.
